It is often the case that sculptures in which different materials, like stone, metal, and pigments are combined, that the artist gives increasingly more priority to only one material (particularly in large sculptures). The careful handling of the surface underlines the clear, harmonious forms which Volar preferred for his work, and which always subordinates itself to the characteristics of the material.
